Philosophy

Scent That Touches the Heart

In Japan, fragrance has long been a companion that calms the mind and brings stillness to a space. Though invisible, a familiar scent can settle emotions and bring deep tranquility — because scent alone has the power to reach the emotional brain directly.

That is why TENNENDO listens closely to the voice of nature's materials, drawing out their full power to deliver authentic fragrance. We wish to share these small moments of peace — with people around the world.

Vision

Toward a Future Where Scent Gently Supports Life

Fragrance is not merely for the nose — it is a moment of communion with the heart. A morning that invites a deep breath. The quiet entry into meditation. The stillness just before sleep.

Scent gently accompanies life — settling emotions, sharpening focus, refining the senses. TENNENDO envisions a future where fragrance enriches the daily life of every person around the world.

Mission

From the Source of Scent to Your Hands

Our incense begins with the careful selection of natural aromatic woods and plants. Imagining the lands where the trees grow, feeling the breath of the materials — and shaping them into fragrance with care.

Knead, form, dry. Every step holds reverence for nature and the spirit of the craftsman. This is TENNENDO's practice, preserved across 400 years.

Committed to Natural Ingredients & Authentic Incense

We carefully select only the finest natural aromatic woods and botanicals, working only with materials sourced directly from nature.

Aloeswood
Aloeswood

A type of aromatic wood so dense it sinks in water — hence its name, "sinking wood." Treasured since ancient times across India, Southeast Asia, China, and Japan as a precious incense material, it is also prized in Chinese medicine for its sedative and detoxifying properties.

Sandalwood
Sandalwood

An evergreen of the Santalaceae family, grown in India, Indonesia, Australia, and beyond. Its rich, sweet woody fragrance has long been used in perfumes and cosmetics. Sandalwood is also renowned for its medicinal benefits and strong antibacterial properties.

Frankincense
Frankincense

A resin exuded from the trunk of the Boswellia tree (Burseraceae family), sourced from northeastern Africa, the Arabian coast, and Somalia. Its fragrance is rich yet mysteriously purifying and clarifying. Widely known as the incense of Christian ritual ceremonies.

Cedar Powder
Cedar Powder

Japanese cedar is a conifer native to Japan, deeply woven into daily life since the Jomon period. Long regarded as a sacred tree associated with Buddhist rites and the spirit world, and abundant in supply, it became an essential base material enabling the mass production of incense. The Yame region is a notable source of high-quality cedar, carefully stone-ground into fine powder by traditional water mills.

Tabu Powder
Tabu Powder

An evergreen of the Lauraceae family, native to Southeast Asia, China, and Taiwan, and found in the warmer regions of Japan such as Kyushu and Shikoku. A familiar tree seen in shrine gardens, temples, and parks. Its branches and leaves are naturally adhesive — dried and ground into powder, tabu serves as a vital binder in incense and mosquito coil production, and as a base material that preserves the integrity of the fragrance.

Natural Materials
01

Delivering Authentic Incense Crafted from Natural Ingredients

We source only all-natural aromatic woods and botanicals, grown in living soil. No synthetic compounds — only the honest breath of nature, shaped into fragrance with patience and precision.

Natural Binder
02

TENNENDO's True Incense Treasures Its Natural Binder

At TENNENDO, the natural binder is treated with the utmost care. Rather than synthetic adhesives, we rely on the organic binding power of tabu bark, which holds the incense together without interfering with the purity of its fragrance.
